Summary: Moon Soo In (Han Ji Hye) was happily married to the eldest son of the wealthy Ma family, owners of the Shinwha Group conglomerate. When her husband unexpectedly dies, the family frames her for embezzlement of company funds and sends her to jail for two years. It is there that she meets three women (Ko Du Shim, On Hyun Kyung, and Ha Yeon Soo) that change her life for the better and the man that will help her love again (Ha Seok Jin). After the women are released from prison, they support one another and gradually build new lives and find new love. But they all have strange ties to the Ma family making it difficult to forget the past until all the wrongs have been righted and the sins exposed.

Recommendation: Let's start off this recommendation with an acknowledgment that the first four episodes of this series are painfully dull and difficult to watch. However, if you can get past that hurdle the series recovers and quickly achieves "watchable" status. So much so, that this became a weekly staple in my k-drama viewing schedule for the last few months. This underdog tale does a nice job depicting the transformation of a group of women from victims in survival mode to competent and self-assured women capable of mastering their destinies. Han Ji Hye played it safe in the role of Moon Soo In and her performance was just okay. Undoubtedly, she was cast for her star power but the real strength of the series is the chemistry between the broader ensemble cast and the overall journey of the series. While the additional 4 episodes did not necessarily serve The Legendary Witch well, it did not hurt the undeniable charm that this show cast over its audience either. This is a must watch among the end-of-year dramas that closed out 2014 and took us into 2015.

Witch's Romance

Summary: Witch's Romance is a 16 episode 2014 k-drama produced for TvN. This romantic comedy explores the unlikely romance between Ban Ji Yeon (Uhm Jung Hwa), a jilted-at-the-altar 39 year old reporter with a difficult personality, and Yoon Dong Ha (Park Seo Jun), a 25 year old professional part-timer still grieving for his dead girlfriend. As they both try to mend broken hearts, they find the companionship they've been missing in one another and the courage to fall in love again.

3 1/2 Hearts for Lots of Laughs

 Recommendation: I loved this k-drama! It is so much fun that I often found myself giggling like a little kid as I watched each episode. The strength of this series rests entirely on the cast as the plot is fairly standard for this genre and doesn't offer up a lot of surprises. Park Seo Joon and Uhm Jung Hwa do most of the heavy lifting with great chemistry and an aura of playfulness that lights up the screen whenever they are together. Maybe I'm a little boy crazy because I'm a fan of all the bromances popping up in k-dramaland lately. Park Seo Joon and Yoon Hyun Min were completely adorkable as BFFs and roommates. I couldn't get enough of them. As expected, all the loose ends in this k-drama are tied up neatly by the last episode and the audience gets to walk away with a big smile.

My Love From Another Star

Plot: My Love From Another Star is a 2014 South Korean drama produced for SBS. The main character is Do Min Joon (Kim Soo Hyun), an alien that arrived on planet Earth 400 years ago. But, after staying behind to help a young window, he lost his chance to return to his home planet. It is now the year 2014 and he has an opportunity to return home in 3 months when a meteor shower passes by Earth. All he has to do is bide his time and wrap up his affairs quietly. His plans, though, are laid to waste when he crosses paths with actress Cheon Song Yi (Jun Ji Hyun), who bears a striking resemblance to the widow he met 400 years earlier. As the pair develop feelings for each other, Do Min Joon is forced to come to terms with the meaning of life and the importance of love.

-1/2 heart because I don't like giving away all my hearts

Recommendation: This is a must watch and will probably top my list for the "best of" 2014 k-dramas. It really is the total package for a drama fanatic. There is plenty of romance, suspense, plot twists, and a very good looking cast of characters. It pushes the "supernatural" k-drama trend in a great direction with a well developed plot that doesn't rely on special effects and gimmicks. The cast as a whole is strong without any weak links. I really loved the contrast between the level headed Do Min Joon and the fiery actress Choi Song Yi - they struck a perfect balance together. The ending is also well rounded and thoughtful. The writers took it in a direction that I didn't anticipate so that was a nice surprise.

Cunning Single Lady

Summary: Cunning Single Lady (aka Sly & Single Again) is a 2014 k-drama produced for MBC. This series follows the trials and tribulations of Na Ae Ra (Lee Min Jung), who marries Cha Jung Woo (Joo Sang Wook) in hopes of having a secure and quiet life as the housewife of a government employee. When he unexpectedly quits his job to start a tech company, the couple's marriage falls apart under the weight of financial and emotional strain and they ultimately divorce. Years later, the pair are reunited thanks to a twist of fate and a street cart brawl. Cha Jung Woo is now a successful CEO worth millions and Na Ae Ra is determined to make him pay for the burdens he placed on her all those years ago. But her plot to exact revenge on him doesn't go quite the way she plans...

Keep your enemies close... and your ex-husbands closer.

Recommendation: The best way for me to describe this k-drama is fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously while still delivering some poignant moments that deal with real emotion. Na Ae Ra and Cha Jung Woo were perfectly cast and their interactions with one another are sickeningly cute - in a good way. I couldn't help but root for them and I looked forward to their scenes. My only complaint is that the series could have benefited from an extra episode to wrap-up everything. The final episode felt rushed and half finished with too many flashbacks. Overall, this is a great romantic comedy and will probably find its way on to my "Best of 2014" list. I encourage others to watch it.

Emergency Couple

Summary: Emergency Couple is a 2014 k-drama produced for TvN. This series follows the couple Oh Chang Min (Choi Jin Hyuk) and Oh Jin Hee (Song Ji Hyo) as they rush into marriage and ultimately divorce. Several years later, the couple is reunited as doctors when they both land internships at the same hospital. All of their unresolved issues suddenly resurface as they are forced to work together in the emergency room under the watchful eye of a demanding department chief (Lee Pil Mo). Both Oh Chang Min and Oh Jin Hee soon realize that both the good and bad moments of the past have made them who they are in the present. Over the course of 21 episodes, the audience waits for the answer to one question: Will they find a way to rekindle their love?

-1 heart for too much verbal abuse

Recommendation: This is an easy recommendation for me to make. I loved this k-drama and I am happy to recommend it to others as a must watch for 2014. While it firmly stands in the RomCom category, I felt that there were some painfully honest and very sad moments as the couple's marriage unravels and eventually falls apart. The writers, director, and cast did a phenomenal job of depicting the difficulty and complexity of managing not just the relationship with a significant other but all the circumstances that surround it: family, work, money, fear of failure, and personal aspirations. Choi Jin Hyuk, Song Ji Hyo, and Lee Pil Mo carried this series with really strong and touching performances.

Miss Korea

Plot:  Miss Korea is a period production set during the IMF crisis in 1997. It follows the trials and tribulations of Oh Ji Young (Lee Yeon Hee) as she vies for the title (and tiara) of Miss Korea at the national beauty pageant. The story is made more complex with the introduction of an old flame (Lee Sun Kyun) that has his own agenda for persuading Oh Ji Young to pursue her dream of being crowned the winner of the pageant.

Good but slow.

Recommendation:  This series starts off strong but runs into some pacing issues after the first several episodes. Viewers with the patience to get through the less exciting episodes in the middle will be rewarded with a very satisfying conclusion at the end. This is a great dramatization of the pageant world and the lengths women will go to wear the crown. It won't make my top 10 list but I still recommend it for RomCom enthusiasts and fans of  Lee Sun Kyun, Lee Ki Woo, and Lee Yeon Hee.

Disturbing or cute?

Other Thoughts: I really wanted to like this one a lot. It had all the right ingredients for a great k-drama: wonderful casting, an interesting setting, and creative plot twists. But the show crept along so slowly that by the time the winner of the pageant was announced I was more interested in the romance between two of the supporting characters - Teacher Jung (Lee Sung Min) and Ko Hwa Jung (Song Seon Mi). I can't find any specific flaws with the acting or the story. It has more to do with the delivery.

My first introduction to Lee Yeon Hee, who played Oh Ji Young, was in the drama Paradise Ranch. I'll be honest and admit that I never finished watching that series because I found most of the characters inane and boring. It really wasn't a great display of her talent. Miss Korea, on the other hand, was a much better vehicle for her to show some range and I liked the sass that she brought to the character Oh Ji Young. The stylists also did a great job of making her look effortlessly gorgeous.

On a side note, Lee Ki Woo was once again cast as the guy that doesn't get the girl. He's got the acting chops to pull off a leading role and he is plenty good looking. So, why?! WHY?!! This is my earnest plea to Lee Ki Woo: Do not accept another role where your character is relegated to being the jerky a-hole that has no chance of winning the leading lady's heart!

I don't know why but I kept waiting for Kim Hyung Joon (Lee Sun Kyun) to stand outside Oh Ji Young's window with a boom box held up over his head ala Say Anything. Is it just me?
